Elissya swooped down from the pale peach sky, the dawning sun beginning to rise behind her. Streaks of pink and red painted streamers across the sky, banners announcing the dawn of a new day. Crystals of frost glistened on the ground like diamonds sparkling in the moonlight. The slate grey rocks famed for their sharp and needle like appearance stabbed at the sky, their points honed enough to shave an owl's feather off.
Within the ring of rocks gleamed the infamous mirror lake, its still waters clearer than a polished looking glass. No ripples danced across the surface, though a breeze swept through the valley. Emerald green conifers swayed in the wind, and deciduous tree leaves flew through the air in a whirlwind of colour.
Elissya opened her mouse leather pack, withdrawing a small clay jar faded from use. She twisted the stopper off of the jar with her beak, then turned towards the rocks. She searched between them for the signs of winter green, a rare herb that was only usable when wilted from the frost's icy breath.
Finding a small plant, she plucked a sprig or two, then placed them into the jar. Using her wing tip, she gently swept her wing across the stone, catching frost crystals on her mottled brown feathers. She dusted the crystals into the jar, then replaced the stopper. She placed it in her bag, and turned towards the lake.
An eery sound came from the lake, and Elissya shivered as the leaf fall breeze whistled through her feathers. It swept away some of the deciduous leaves, and a bit of the trees skeleton showed through. The lake seemed to hum, it's voice high and wavering. She shivered again, then walked closer to the sound.
Stepping gingerly to avoid the jagged points of the beaks, she made her way slowly to the water's edge. Slowly she reached into her pack and pulled out a crystal blue bottle, tied tightly with white cord. She untied the stopper, then knelt next to the lake's surface.
As she dipped the bottle into the lake, ripples lightly graced the lake's surface. As the ripples cleared, Elissya saw her reflection begin to show. She turned quickly to avoid the snare of the lake's charms, but in her mind she saw her luminous green eyes, enchanted by the lake's magic.
It was said that drinking the water of the Mirror Lake gave you clairvoyant sight, and Elissya had a foreboding that she would need the sight soon. An ominous feeling had been settling over the entire land, and signs had begun to show her the shadows of horrors.
The days grew shorter, and the nights longer, yet owlets were ushered inside earlier. The forests whispered at night, something malevolent creeping silently in the shadows. Elissya knew not what was causing this, but she did know one thing.
The Cold Winds were rising again.
