*Note: The larger the owl, the shorter their life span generally is. This timeline is based off of a big owl.
*Note: Remember that not all owls follow this timeline. Figure out how long your owl lives in the wild and go from there.
Timeline 0-120 (10 years) months
- 0-3 months: Owlet; At birth their eyes are shut, but they open about three days after birth. Keep in mind that they're all down and cannot fly. Doesn't stop them from developing their muscle though. Two months in though, most start losing their downy tufts and start growing juvenile feathers. At three months most have started branching and some have tried flying.
- 4-7 months: Juvenile; Some owls by now have left their parents' care to go out into the world. They can fly, not as well as the adults, due to their lack of experience and due to the fact that their juvenile feathers are poorer quality and softer. Around the seventh month is when juvenile feathers are being replaced by flight feathers.
- 8-84 months: Adult! 8'D
- 85-120 months: Elder... until dead.
Position and Descriptions
- Highborn Shrieks
- Shrieks
- St. Aggies
- Pure Ones
- Guardians of Ga'Hoole

Position and Descriptions
- Highborn Shrieks
- Kaiser: At the very top of the chain is the Kaiser, a male shriek. Kaisers are expected to be wise, civilized, and educated, unlike their other brethren. Kaisers are to be male, but the female counterpart are kaiserins.
- Council: Made up of scholars is the Council. The Council is a collection of some of the finest shrieks about and they're in charge of what they're name suggests: helping the Kaiser(in) govern.
- Shrieks
- Sentinels: The rest of the shriek population. The majority of them have lost their civilized ways and adopted a 'survival of the fittest' point of view.
- St. Aggies
- Ablah General: Top of the hierarchy, the Ablah General is in control of the canyonlands and those that occupy it. Raised to the top through brutal dictatorship and makes sure to stay that way through (drastic) means.
- Lieutenant: The Ablah General's right-hand owl. Usually stays with the Ablah General through thick-and-thin, but not always. The Lieutenant is mostly the one that carries out the Ablah General's orders. Some report to the Lieutenant.
- Supervisor: Below the Lieutenant, there's usually a nice handful of them wandering around the academy watching over the workings. They're the ones that make sure the moon-blinked owlets are doing what they should be. Occasionally goes out to 'recruit.'
- Pit Guardians: Pretty much the moon-blinked owlet's caretaker. They feed the owlets and make sure they stay awake during the day in order to ensure they sleep under the moonlight. Kindest of all the St. Aggies' commanders.
- Orphans: Owlets that are taken away from home due to falling from the tree or being snatched directly from the nest. They are moon blinked into being minions and are usually doing jobs during the day. They do not have real names, but are assigned numbers such as 15-3 or 24-5.
- Pure Ones
- High Tyto: A barn owl who has risen to this position by killing the original High Tyto in a ritual combat. The High Tyto must be a tyto alba.
- High Tyto's Mate: Pretty much explanatory. Holds the same amount of power as the High Tyto and can take over when the High Tyto dies. Must be a tyto alba too.
- Barn Owls: Very high up in the Pure One's hierarchy are barn owls, or their scientific name: tyto alba. They are the only ones that are able to become the High Tyto.
- Grass Owls: Very similar to barn owls are the grass owls, also known as tyto longimembris. They come after barn owls in the hierarchy.
- Masked Owls: Next to dead last on the hierarchy are masked owls. Their scientific name is tyto novaehollandiae.
- Sooty Owls: Also known as the tyto multipunctata, they are the lowest on the Pure One's hierarchy.
- *Note: This hierarchy is based on how 'pure' an owl is. Pure Ones are made up of all owls in the tyto family and as you go down, the less the owl looks like a barn owl.
- Guardians of Ga'Hoole
- King: Supreme ruler of the Tree. A fair and just ruler though and unlike the Pure Ones, can be of any species. He generally makes the decisions, but always consults the Parliament.
- Queen: Works alongside the King. Like her mate, she is also fair and just to those that work below her. Consults the Parliament before making huge decisions also.
- Chief Ryb: Parliament member; The top ryb and has talents in more than one chaw. Because of that, the Chief Ryb is able to help the other rybs teach and often acts as the main adviser to the king. Maintains the Chaw of Chaws.
- Ryb: Parliament member; They are teachers of the Tree and only teach one subject of a chaw. They also go on missions with their specified chaw.
- Blacksmith/Metals Ryb: Parliament member; Creates tools using fire for the Tree. Also maintains the Metals chaw as a Ryb.
- Librarian/Printers Ryb: Parliament member; Takes care of the Library and all of the books inside it. Makes sure they are in order and undamaged. If a book is damaged, the Librarian will repair it. Also maintains the Printers chaw as a Ryb.
- Cook: Cooks food for the Tree.
- Singer: Sings beautiful songs when the owls settle in for sleep, rise for the night, and on special occasions like holidays or celebrations. Almost always a snowy owl.
- Guardians: Owls who have mastered the chaw(s) that they have studied in. Occasionally they are called upon to speak with the Parliament.
- Matrons: Owls who have specialized in the Healing Chaw. Rarely do they fight, though some do act as Guardians as well. At times they are brought to battles to treat owls in the field.
- Students: Owls learning how to be a guardian for the Great Tree. Part of a Chaw.
- Juniors: Young owls old enough to be students or new arrivals at the Tree. They are in the process of being chawed and are going through chawlets.
- Owlets: Baby owl chicks recently hatched. Not yet old enough to participate in classes or do much of anything.
- Nest-maid Snakes: Keep the tree clean, serve food, and join special guilds.
