On the path to become a Guardian, one must become a Junior first. As Juniors, they are taught about several chaws in Chawlets, mock chaws that help with tapping of owlets for their official chaw. Rybs choose the owlets by sneaking objects that represent their chaw into the nest.
Colliering Chaw
- Item: A piece of coal held with a dried caterpillar
- Fundamental: Forest fire studying, study colliering, learn elements of fires, how they start, properties of thermal drafts, coal types/formation, and fuel ladders. Ready for fire penetration and coal retrieval.
- Advanced: Learn different flying/coal catching techniques, go out on frequent forest fire missions, spot fires from a distance, recognize prime times/seasons. Blacksmithing is optional.
Metals Chaw
- Item: A forged iron tree
- Fundamental: Learn about metals that are easily found on/near island, introduced to forge, identify basic blacksmithing tools. Have to pass Forge Acumen and Safety Test (F.A.S.T.) to continue.
- Advanced: Identify bonk coals, build/maintain forge fires, and correctly use hammer and tongs. Should be able to make simple objects in the end.
Weather-Interpretation Chaw
- Item: A dried caterpillar
- Fundamental: Learn how to fly in different types of wind, how to use wind to one's advantage, how to fly in turbulent winds/harsh weather conditions, and the structure of storms. Required to fly through at least one small storm.
- Advanced: Learn how to fly safely in all harsh weather such as thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.
Tracking Chaw
- Item: A pellet
- Fundamental: Learn how to identify tracks of birds, small land animals, and how to piece together clues to tell of past events. Will go on small missions to develop proper groundwork skills.
- Advanced: Will practice trail tracking techniques (low-altitude flying, etc), expected to recognize and memorize tracks of each animal and how to tell them apart. Given opportunities to go on important missions such as search-and-rescue ones.
Navigation Chaw
- Item: Ten nooties representing the Golden Talons
- Fundamental: Taught to use sky as a map, required to recognize key stars and constellations, and how they relate to landmass locations at different points in the year. Opportunities to go on as many night flights as possible, and will participate in simple tracing exercises.
- Advanced: Learn more advanced studies and practices of Navigation, will use previously learned knowledge, and learn backgrounds of each constellation (including name in different languages and cultures). Given opportunities to go on important missions.
Ga'Hoolology Chaw
- Item: A milkberry
- Fundamental: Learn how to maintain symbolic relationship with Great Ga'Hoole Tree, practice several exercises such as pellet-burying, vine-trimming, and pruning. Required to write essays.
- Advanced: Learn about the Tree's history, study growth patterns, various blights and tree diseases, and how the actions of its inhabitants have affected it.
Search-and-Rescue Chaw
- Item: A molted feather
- Fundamental: Teach advanced flying skills including effective high-altitude and low-altitude circling, diving, emergency landings, and in-flight object retrieval. Will go on real reconnaissance missions and expected to give oral/written reports. With ryb's approval, some will be introduced to battle claws.
- Advanced: Once one can fly comfortably with battle claws, they will go onto learn more advanced fighting techniques. Will learn all offensive/defensive moves such as slashing, blocking, reverse shears, and two-footed attacks. Learn drawbacks of battle claws and how to defend against battle-clawed opponent if you are claw-less.
Ga'Hoolian History
- Course Description: Learn about Ga'Hoole's social, political, and cultural development from the founding of the Tree to the arrival of the newest king. Learn about the rise of Hoole, effects of the ember at the Great Tree, the Gray Ages, the Northern Alliance, the War of the Ice Claws, the Battle of Little Hoole and the rise, fall, and rise of the Pure Ones. Text heavy chaw.
Owl Studies: Gizzard Matters
- Course Description: Take an abstract approach beyond physical processes in studying the nature of the gizzard and how it guides owls. Also learn about disorders of the gizzard and effects of flecks, moon-blinking, moon-scalding, and shattering.
Owl Studies: The Healing Arts
- Course Description: A more peaceful, but important study. Will learn how to recognize symptoms of common and non-common ailments, how to treat them, and how to dress scratches and gashes. Quiz-heavy chaw, but with ryb's approval, some may be able to go on battle missions to help treat wounded.
Independent Study And Exchange Program
- Course Description: An exchange program between the Glauxian Brother's Retreat in order for owls to learn knowledge from the Great Tree as well as the Guardians learning from the Glauxian Brothers. Guardians are encouraged to spend a season or two with the brothers for studying and meditating.
*Note: All must be tested for flight proficiency. Those that fail are put into Remedial Flight Lab and Power Flight until they pass the test.
