Name: Safiya (Meaning Pure)
Age: 17 moons
Species: Tyto Castanops Tasmanian Masked Owl
Kingdom: Pure Ones
Position: New recruits trainer, warrior
Distinguishing Features: Safiya is always seen wearing her silver Battle Claws. She also has a long scar hidden by her head feathers.
Personality: Safiya is a ruthless killer, but forms what is seen as a weak sense of love towards the owlets she tutors. This is due to a horror in her past.
Strengths: She is nimble and able to dodge the swiftest of attacks, calculating and loves to sing, confusing her opponents.
Weaknesses: She tends to leave a really noticeable trail by leaving feathers and pellets behind, sings during the most inappropriate times, such as battles (though the song always fits) and forms a sentimental attachment to each and every one of the owlets she tutors.
Story: Safiya was a teenaged owl when the Pure Ones entered her life. She was the third-youngest in an impressive eight siblings, obviously from two different clutches of eggs. She was shunned by her family, who were always fussing over Clart, her oldest brother, even when Safiya became the best flier and hunter. Finally, a beautiful group of Barn owls flew past her nest entirely by chance while her parents were out hunting. She gasped when she saw the glinting of the Battle Claws they wore. The sound alerted the owls, and a rough-looking Sooty pulled her from the nest, but there was an edge to his cruelty that she found darkly alluring. Using a quick twist, she slipped from her captor’s talons, but flew up beside him instead of fleeing. This intrigued the Sooty, who stroked forward to tell the group’s leader. After telling her story, and in return being told the history and aims of the Pure Ones, she was granted an audience with the High Tyto, who was impressed with the young owl’s understanding of the cause and believing that fate had called her here, saying she was pulled to them, and even her name meant ‘pure’. His theory was proven when she didn’t hesitate to slaughter her mother for her TUPSI ceremony. He even allowed the promising Masked Owl to bypass the ‘Code of Purity’ and was granted the position of both warrior and New Recruit Trainer, a position usually given only to Tyto Alba. She discovered that the owlets she trained were irresistible to love. She treated them all like her own hatchlings, and they treated her like their mother. It was then she met the most beautiful owl in her life. A Tyto novaehillondae named Caine. Within the year, the two owls had mated.
Then came one of the worst events in Pure One history. An event known as the Blood Owlet. A mad, elderly Hawk Owl broke into the stronghold and killed twenty-seven owlets and fourteen guards. One of them was Safiya’s own hatchling, Tia. Safiya was almost killed, but miraculously managed to survive by clinging to the image of Caine and Tia. When she pulled herself from the brink, it was the High Tyto himself who took her to see the bodies of her mate and owlet. Only two owlets were left alive, and one of them was missing her third left talon. She trained them relentlessly, determined to avenge her mate and owlet. She had refrained from re-mating, but after a chance meeting with Caine’s scroom in the Spirit Woods, she decided to look for a new mate, but she knows no-one will ever take Caine’s spot in her heart. Unknown to her, Caine’s scroom refuses to leave her until she is truly happy.
Codeword: FraggleBeak
IC: Safiya glanced around. There were currently thirteen owlets in her care at the moment, and they were having sparring practice. Each owlet was wearing rough wooden claws hewn from wood. The thirteenth owlet, Flare, was sparring with her, and doing magnificently. As she turned toward Timarus and Little Petey, she felt a soft poke in her stomach. Looking down, she noticed the pure white face of Flare cheering “I got you! I got you!”
She decided to let it slide that in a real fight she wouldn’t be looking absently around. Suddenly a bonging gong sounded. Instantly, a mass of white, brown and grey owls swooped overhead. She quickly bundled the owls into the safe room guarded by a sooty and left the owlets in the care of Tutti, a lovely but crippled old Bay Owl with just one wing who had decided to guard the owlets during fights rather than eat Pure One food yet do nothing for the cause. She nodded then sped off toward the armoury. She needed no battle claws, she already wore them, but slid her head into a matching helmet and followed the Pure Ones into battle.
