He flew like he breathed, slow and meticulous and soft. He paid no attention to the clouds, or the breeze, or the stars as they winked at him in the inky folds of the night. All the large masked owl paid attention to was the hunger in his belly, and the antidote for that hunger that he clutched in his large talons.
Celer's wings drummed like a heartbeat as he perched on the branch of a withering oak tree. One talon dug into the pale wood as the other lifted enough for him to grab the mouse by its limp head with his beak. Then he finally settled both legs on the branch and continued to swallow the mouse whole in several gulps. When his prey was finally resting in his belly Celer waited motionlessly, his tired half-lidded eyes inspecting the ground for the slightest hint of movement. He contemplated snatching a moth that was fluttering in the moonlight, but decided to wait for something more meaty to scurry by.
The night barely shifted when he heard the leaves rustle below him. Ler descended swiftly upon what turned out to be a vole. His talons snatched up the morsel and a quick thrust of his beak silenced it forever. Ler flew thoughtlessly until he found a hollow, and entered it with his wings fluttering and kicking up some dust, feathers and twigs. He tossed the vole unceremoniously to the tiny owlet that lay there. "I was told to feed you," Ler said quietly as he ruffled his wings and then sat down, his dark half-lidded eyes patient and tired.

. Zach froze as he heard the tree creak as something landed in his hollow. He opended his eyes and saw a masked owl. "U-" He paused, thinking of what to say. "Hi. U-uh are you okay?" His voice was so cute and sweet any owl would almost fall into it and he looked at the vole.
Zach looked alarmed, his little heart pounding. His voice squeaked, quivering so much he almost fell over. This owl seemed mad. He knew that some masked owls were really mean since they were treated bad. He quickly gulped up the vole and a little pellet popped out of his mouth. He had found some meal worms in his hollow and pushed some over to the masked owl. "Want some?"

Ler did not reply to the little owlet at first; he merely nodded, thinking that would satisfy the child's curiosity. He watched with vague interest as Zach ate the vole. An unfamiliar sense of accomplishment swelled in his chest as the little one ate his kill. Ler couldn't help but wonder if it was a sliver of paternal pride, though he didn't feel anything in particular for the chick itself.
Ler tilted his head at Zach as the owlet pushed the meal worms towards him. He wasn't sure how to react, as the only one he ever shared anything with was his sister. Well, that had been the only person who had ever wanted to share with him. Ler was still vaguely hungry too, but he just smiled at the chick and nodded towards him. "I'm fine. You eat, a little tyto needs to become a big and strong tyto." With that, Ler shifted again; for an owl as large as he, the hollow felt cramped. "Well, maybe not too big. What's your name, child?" Though he seemed half-asleep, he still managed to appear interested.
