Name: Aerion
Gender: Male
Age: 29 Moons
Species: Tyto Alba (Barn Owl)
Kingdom: Pure Ones
Position: Pure Ones Assassin, High Tyto-to-Be, Former Hireclaw and Slipgizzle
Picture:
Description:
The most obvious feature of Aerion is simply his size, as for a Barn Owl he is huge, at least roughly close to that of a normal Barred Owl. It is not know exactly why he is this way, but it nonetheless produces a rather intimidating look, which is lessened by the fact that he also extremely handsome for a Barn Owl. It's hard even consider him much of a fighter, as the way he handles himself would suggest more of a poet than a fierce warrior. His body and face are as white as an owl could possibly be, so much so that he can often be mistaken for an ethereal scroom. But underneath that pleasant face is an owl built for war. He is extremely strong and muscular, achieved after years of punishing work. He is more than capable of carrying away something a large as a fully-grown rabbit or even a small fox. Another feature which is also quite noticeable are the scars that cover his legs; they are so prevalent that it is mostly scar tissue that coveres his talons and legs. Due to his constant tinkering, he has wounded himself quite often on the legs when various devices backfire or fail on him. Unfortunately, his scars tend to tear easily and he is often seen with bloody talons.
Personality:
As an archetypal Byronic hero, Aerion gives the impression of holding most people in disdain but is quite chivalrous toward female and elderly owls. He is extremely arrogant, believing himself to be the best owl to ever live and to be above others. He can also be very sarcastic if he wants to be and is very confident. Because of his certain charisma and good looks, many a female owl has fallen for him. Despite his luck with girls however, he never forms emotional attachments for more than a brief amount of time, if at all, because of the way his father had taught him that to love something or someone was to be destroyed, and that love, therefore, makes a person weak. He thinks that if he were to ever have any owlets, he would have a hard time loving them, but in reality he will be very loving and care deeply for them.
The only people Aerion has ever had any feelings of love for before meeting Katara were his parents. Beneath Aerion's flippant exterior lies a soul in constant torment. He is filled with a deep-seated rage that he keeps in check most of the time and which he channels into fighting and assassinating owls and also, sometimes, his sarcastic and nasty remarks. Aerion calms himself by inventing things and fighting. Though he never showed attachment or love to a female owl for too long, he is very passionate on the inside. He loves on a deep and passionate level, and will move mountains to protect his beloved from harm.
Aerion's conceited exterior hides a profound inner hatred for himself, as he believes himself to be a bad owl for all the things he has done for his job. Aerion has a strong moral core, though at times can be extremely vindictive, though often only cruel to protect those he loves. He can be very blunt and usually tells the hard truth, unless it would endanger him, his loved ones or his objective. He can quote passages from the many books he had read from the others, and has something to say about everything.
Once he has set his mind on something, it is extremely difficult to dissuade him and no amount of threat to his own personal safety will affect him. Of course, the fact that he has been fairly successful in his life has also allowed him to develop quite a cocky and arrogant attitude and is more than happy to boast about his achievements to any and all. While he doesn't have the mind for battle strategy, he is instead quite gifted in understanding how things work, be it an owl's body or the weather.
Strengths:
-Due to his rather muscular build, Aerion is much stronger than an average Barn Owl and some might say he could be as strong as an adult Great Horned Owl.
-Due to his incredible size and strength, he has great stamina and durability. He can fight longer than any owl, and will not tire.
-As a result of his immense strength, he is also an incredible flier. Although he is not capable of many intricate maneuvers, he instead makes up for it in pure speed.
-For all his failings, Aerion is, nevertheless, an extremely capable fighter, made more deadly by his considerable use of new and strange devices of his own design.
-Due to his upbringing, Aerion is also quite intelligent, and will flaunt it in other's faces.
Weaknesses:
-Aerion does have one old wound, on his left wing, that was caused by one of his old Hireclaw missions. Though while it healed long ago, nonetheless it often causes him great pain, enough so that he can end up going yeep.
-Aerion is fairly arrogant and boastful, believing himself to be the greatest owl to ever live.
-Aerion refuses to trust most other owls, no matter how sincere a gesture might be. He was taught by his parents to trust only himself and, as such, has a very hard time trusting others.
-He is a risk-taker of the highest order, no matter how likely he is to be injured, he is willing to go to whatever lengths it takes if he has set his mind on something.
History:
Aerion was born up in the North, though not in the Northern Kingdoms, but instead in a mostly uncivilized section where few owls tended to live. The most often-cited reason for this was the plethora of ruins left by the Others. An entire city of abandoned buildings laid there, undisturbed for who knows how long. Most owls fired it to unsettling to live so close to the remains of the Others and that fact is what made the area so appealing to Aerion's parents when they arrived. They were formally soldiers of the Northern Alliance and had seen extensive conflict during the War of the Ice Claws. Following the end of the war, his parents decided not to remain in the Northern Kingdoms, both were haunted by the deaths of loved ones and comrades and found it impossible to return to a normal life there. They left and searched for a home far away from other owls, hoping that isolation would allow them to forget their losses. They settled in the remains of an Other's library, where they had the first of what would be three children.
Aerion was the second child, born about two years after his older brother, Glydis, and about two moons before his only sister, Emma. His sister died while hatching and Aerion’s mother soon followed due to grief, and it changed Aerion’s father. His father grew cold and unloving, seeing Aerion as only a thing to train to be sucessful. His father raised him to be strong, and that to love was to be destroyed, and therefore it made you weak. Glydis had already left the nest by the time he was hatched and while his brother would return once in a while, Aerion basically grew up all by himself. In the immediate area there were less than 5 other owl families, but all of them tended to keep to themselves, so Aerion never had any friends. However, what he did have was a lifetime's worth of knowledge at his disposal and from the moment he could open his eyes, he delved into the tomes of the Ones, or at least the ones that were still readable. Although he was initially interested in the great myths of the Ones, stories about pirates, great heroes, romance, poetry and bravery, he became more fascinated with all the strange inventions that the Ones had produced during their time of existence. Although there were some pieces that were vaguely familiar to things owls had created, there were other devices that were far beyond what any owl could possibly have imagined. He started collecting examples of these devices from around the city and began taking these apart, trying to learn about how these things worked.
Aerion became a Slipgizzle and a Hireclaw under the tutelage from his parents, who taught him most of his combat skills based on their own teachings from back in the Northern Kingdoms. But, truth be told, such skills were not of much use in his current environment so, against the best wishes of his parents, he travelled to the Northern Kingdoms in search of work, though he was also interesting in looking for other traces of the Others. He spent about a year in the Kingdom as a Hireclaw, a Slipgizzle and an Assassin, but he found himself unfulfilled there and left, eventually journeying into the kingdoms down south, looking for more work. He mostly abandoned his pursuit of the Others and was more interested now is finding work that would allow him to live better than he had. To this end, he eventually ran into the Pure Ones, or at least the recent incarnation of the Pure Ones.
The Pure Ones were initially stunned to encounter such a Barn Owl and initially some thought he was an abomination of Great Horned and Barn Owl descent and they tried to kill him. Aerion however completely dominated them and killed at least four owls all on his own before some Pure One officers stepped in and offered him a place within their organization. The demonstration of his skills and strength were enough to impress them and he was offered a very high position within the Pure One Army as a commander. Aerion refused the offer, having no interest in associating with other owls an no skill with battle strategy, but did still agree to join the Pure Ones cause, but only on the condition that they provide for his basic needs so he could focus on other pursuits. Although there was some disagreement over allowing him such autonomy, High Tyto Tytus gave his own seal of approval after Aerion had revealed his knowledge of the Others, and on the condition he would be an assassin for the Pure Ones. He was immediately put to work researching the various devices created by the Others in order to hopefully use that knowledge to produce something for the Pure Ones that could finally turn the tide in their favour, and assassinating various Guardians and St. Aegolians. Unfortunately, the research would be slow-going for a long time, as the Pure Ones did not have easy access to any ruins of the Others and he had to resort to recollecting what he still remembered from his childhood.
During one mission to the Great Tree to assassinate a new made Guardian Ryb, he discovered the Great Tree's vast library, and with it their archives of Other literature. He was amazed at the condition of the books, scrolls and other writings, and decided to steal some of the more intriguing technology ones. He decided to return to the Tree again and take more of the books. Aerion told Tytus of the Guardian's vast archives, and Tytus approved any raiding missions on the Tree.On a later mission to the Tree with a raiding party, Aerion was discovered smuggling the books. As he and his raiding party were fleeing from he Guardians, they got caught within a huge storm. The Guardians, knowing the had ineptly experienced owls with them, left Aerion and his party to the storm.
Aerion and his party were hopelessly trapped within the storm, but Aerion had it in his mind to save the books. He took all of the books, 3 packs in all, and flew towards the eye of the storm by accident. He tried to ride out, but he became too sucked into the storm's momentum. He was spiralling closer and closer to the eye when he collided with another owl. He initially thought that the other owl was a Guardian and dropped the books to prepare to fight her, but he was shocked to watch the other owl fold in her wings and dived into the storm further, closer to the eye. He watched as she swooped and caught the packs with her talons and dove away from the eye.
Something within him sparked as he watched her fearlessly pursue the books, and how graceful she was, though little did he know it was love. He dove towards her, though he did not have her finesse and almost ended up in the eye. He managed to angle away at the last second, and was flying out of the storm when his wing injury caused him to yeep. The other owl flew after Aerion, and managed to revive him before he hit the ground. She gave him the books and a kiss and flew back off into the storm. Aerion didn't know who the mysterious owl was, but he resolved to find out. He heard some officers talking about how the crazy Supreme Commander Katara had been flying through the storm again last night, and Aerion knew it was her. After this Aerion suddenly started to do whatever he could to impress her, or at least the best that he could. Of course, given his lack of high rank, he was often barred from ever seeing her and eventually, after some time, he began to give up. However, they would by chance meet each other again.
IC:
Aerion held the magnifying glass up with his left talon as he peered down at the uncovered workings of a watch, carefully observing as each piece worked with those around it, allowing the watch to tick the time away. It was one of four watches he had in his collected, the others hung from the walls of his hollows, each filling the air with the sounds of soft ticks. He had leaned quite early that, despite the universal use of each device, none of the watches he had come across had been built the same way. More often than not, the inner workings of the watches differed in such great ways, it was hard to believe that they all did the same thing. The Others had been quite the tinkers, rarely ever satisfied with how a device operated, they appeared to continue to change and, in some instances, even improve on designs that already functioned very well. The trick was figuring out which of these innovations were for the better and what he could possibly do with them. It wasn't easy, he had no manuals explaining how these things operated, so instead he had to spend hours removing pieces and checking to see how that affected the operation of the watch. Sometimes there wasn't even an apparent change until much later, other times the change was instant. Watches had been one he had researched extensively, mostly due to the fact that they were some of the only devices that still operated even now without much effort. But this new watch he had acquired was unique, this watch had one large hand that recorded hours, with small hands that recorded minutes and seconds. But these hands were separate, with their own clocks and were not integrated with the large had into one clock like the other watches did. He wanted to know what parts on this watch operated those hands and to see how they integrated with the other parts.
He set down the magnifying glass and then attacked what appeared to be modified battleclaws onto his talons. These claws were not for combat, but instead were crafted to give him a much more delicate touch than he could achieve with his own talons. You had to be extremely careful working with these devices, even the Others had used specialized tools in order to build and fix these devices, and Aerion had taken inspiration from those devices in order to create his own tools. Slowly the owl put the watch onto the floor and carefully used the claws to remove a very small gear. He set it down and closed the back of the watch before turning the watch over and inspecting it's face. The big hand and the minute hand were still operating, but the second hand had ceased. He immediately grabbed a piece of charcoal and started writing on the walls of his hollow, making notes of the changes that had occurred and some conjecture on what other changes might do. For many other owls, such work would bore them to death, but for Aerion, he almost felt like a child who had been given a new owlipoppen.
