A clanking rang through Kuneer as a reddish Barn Owl hammered at the finnishing touches on a pair of battle claws. Lyra lifted the red-hot claws and dipped them in a bucket of water. A sizzling noise filled the air. When Lyra lifted it out the metal had dripped, destroying one talon of the claws. "Racdrops!" she swore loudly.

Prue had been passing over Kuneer, inspecting the odd vegetation that jutted from the ground like emerald ripples in a fabric of sand and drought.
Her wings gradually began to weaken as the darkness of night leaked from the sky.
Perhaps I could find lodging with a Burrowing owl for the day, Prue thought herself. As she prepared to light down near a burrow, the silence of dawn was interrupted by a loud cursing.
"Racdrops!" came a female voice from within the burrow. Prue sheepishly approached the hollow, unsure whether or not it was wise to disturb this frustrated owl.
With her talons curled into a fist, she made a soft rapping on the hardened wall similar to a knock. She could smell the obnoxious fumes of smoke drifting from a chimney-like hole in the ceiling of the burrow.
Prue awaited a response patiently.

A reddish head popped out of the cave. The face of a Barn Owl. "Oh, glaux, sorry! Did I startle you with my swearing? I just ruined a pair of battle claws I've been working on for a moon, and I was a bit angry. Come in. I'm sure I've got some vole somewhere. I'm Lyra, daughter of Annabeth and Arbron.

Prue was shocked to find a smiling Barn owl emerge from the den, as she was accustomed to finding Burrowing owls. She was startled by how hospitable this owl was, despite the fact that they had only just met.
It struck Prue like a bolt of lightning as the owl's words seeped in. "My apologies, did you say Arbron?" Prue stuttered.
"He was my uncle, I never met him but my mother would occasionally speak to my father about him."

"W-w-what!?" Exclaimed Lyra, stepping back a bit. "That makes us.." she stopped to work something out on her talons, "..COUSINS! I have family! EEeEEEEEEeeeEE!" Shrieked Lyra. "What's your name!!! I have a pcture of Arbron here. I drew it myself." She held up a picture. "He was the Tyto smith." Attachments:

Prue winced as the Barn owl erupted with glee. "My name is Prue, it's a pleasure to meet you." she smiled, holding out her talon in a welcoming gesture. The owl held up a drawing of a Tyto alba, she couldn't help but note how his kind face reminded her of her mother.
She spent a moment gazing sadly at the picture, before turning away gingerly. "I'm sorry."

Lyra stopped bouncing around. "That's okay. So, fill me in. Where do you live? What do you do? I mean, I'm 18 moons old, and I've just met you. Have you ever forged? It's how I made my living."

Prue took a moment to savor the thought of a living relative, her gizzard gave a warm quaver as she thought of it.
"Well, I am a Guardian now. But before that I roamed Silverveil and the Northern Kingdoms for moons, smithing." Prue felt a sudden twinge of guilt settle on her gizzard as if weighing it down.
Prue knew she hadn't told Lyra everything, but they had just met and she was unsure if Lyra would even understand her past.
"And you?"

"I've always been a smith. I've heard of the Great Ga'Hoole tree. To be honest, I've always dreamed of being the smith there. Can you take me? Please?"

"You would like to go? Why, certainly." Prue beamed. "But, uh... Lyra. I would like to tell you something first."
Prue braced herself. She knew it would be difficult for such a young owl to cope with what her new-found cousin once was.
"I haven't told you everything about me."

"When I was just an owlet, my parents and I were ambushed by a group of Pure Ones." Prue explained as the scene of her parent's murder arose fresh in her mind.
"When they were killed, I was given a choice. I could live and join the Pure Ones or suffer the same fate as my parents. I was just a little owlet... I - I.. joined them."

"WHAT!!!!" Shrieked Kyra. "THE PURE ONES? HOW-HOW-H..." "What's wrong?" asked Prue. "The thing is... I don't hate them because of what they do... I hate them for another reason..."

"Well....because I had joined too. Or at least, I tried to. But I had so much ash on me they thought I was a sooty and turned me away."
